mlp | diy pink chair

Have a piece of furniture you love but want something new? We painted a beautiful tufted chair at the studio recently with some great friends!

So my fabulous friend, Soozie, has this incredible velvety tufted purple chair. I was in need of a chair for an upcoming baby session and Soozie had offered to lend it to me! It was perfect for my session with the little one year old… except it needed a little TLC. This chair has lived a fun life… being toted from photoshoot to photoshoot… fields of flowers and beautiful studio rooms… and it has lots of life left (we just needed to give it a little love)!  Soozie really wanted to change the color but reupholstering furniture can get difficult & expensive. Being Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan fans, we decided to visit my neighbor over at IDEAS Vintage Market and buy some supplies. (This is a store where dreams come true!)  So a girls date it was… Soozie (our friends Charlene & Emily) and myself showed that chair a day of pampering! Just wait until you see the results!

To learn how to paint your own furniture, check out our DIY steps below!

BEFORE

Changing your style is easier (and less expensive) than you think.

DIY Pink Chair
Supplies:

  • Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan
    • Color – Antoinette
  • Natural bristle brush
  • Spray bottle filled with water
  • Bucket or small bowl to mix your paint & water
  • Drop cloth
  • Furniture
  • 300 grit sandpaper
  • Clear wax (optional)

Tips: Work in small sections to get the best results!

Steps:

  1. Set the drop cloth down where you want to paint and then set the chair or another piece of furniture you’re painting in the center of the cloth to avoid getting paint on your floors.
  2. Thoroughly clean your chair (we vacuumed ours).
  3. After cleaning, take your spray bottle and find a small section to start. Generously spray the area you will be painting. This step is critical. Make sure your sections are very damp but not soaked.
  4. With your (SLIGHTLY) watered down paint, apply a thin layer of Chalk Paint®.
  5. Continue working in small sections until your piece is covered with a base coat. You can add several (THIN) layers of paint until you achieve your desired look.
  6. After your paint is dry, sand it with 300 grit sandpaper. This will create a dust so be sure to keep your drop cloth down & your vacuum ready.
  7. To finish your project, use clear wax on the chair (We skipped this step because of the velvet texture of our chair).
  8. Let it dry and you’re camera ready!
